When searching for a registered breeder, keep these key points in mind:

  • Registration: Ensure they are recognised by a state or Territory member body of Dogs Australia (eg. Dogs NT)
  • Health Testing: Ask about health screening and genetic testing for common breed-related conditions.
  • Living Conditions: Visit their premises (or video call if not local) to ensure puppies are raised in clean, safe, and loving environments.
  • Knowledge and Passion: A good breeder should be knowledgeable about the breed and willing to answer all your questions.

Prices can vary based on the puppy’s conformation (i.e. quality of the puppy), and if you are seeking mains or limited registration. Generally, you can expect to pay between $1500 to $5000 for a puppy from a registered breeder, with the upper end of the scale including mains registration. This price includes all vaccinations, worming, vet checks, microchipping and pedigree registration transfer fees. Puppy freighting will be an additional cost.

When you purchase one of our puppies you will receive:

  • Health records: Vaccination history, worming records and vet checkups
  • Microchiop details: You will need to transfer the microchip from the breeder’s name into your name
  • Purchase agreement: A copy of the agreement you signed which outlines the conditions of sale and yours and the breeder’s responsibilities.
  • Breeder support: Guidance on care and training as you welcome your puppy home.

Like all breeds, Cocker Spaniels can be prone to specific health conditions. Common breed issues include:

  • Ear infections: Due to their floppy ears.
  • Eye conditions: Such as cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy (PRA).
  • Hip dysplasia: A genetic condition affecting joint health.

Be sure to discuss health screenings with your breeder to ensure your puppy has been tested.

Cocker Spaniels shed seasonally and their coat can grow quite long. Weekly brushing is ideal to avoid matting and grooming once every 2 to 3 months will make it easier to manager your cocker’s coat.

Feeding a nutritious diet is essential for your puppy’s growth. We recommend high-quality puppy kibble from Royal Canin for medium sized dogs. Royal Canin contains all the required nutrients and should be fed to them until they are 1 year old. Puppy tummies are sensitive and they can get upset by introducing raw meat too early.

The ideal age to bring a puppy home is between 8 to 12 weeks. By this time, they have started their vaccinations and socialization process, making them better equipped to adapt to their new environment. Ethical breeders will not remove puppies from their mother before 8 weeks.

Cocker Spaniels require daily exercise. Aim for at least 30 to 60 minutes of physical activity each day, which can include walks, playtime, or training sessions.

Basic obedience training is essential as Cocker Spaniels are intelligent and eager to please. Socialization classes and consistency with commands are key to raising a well-behaved dog.

Preparing your home is crucial for a smooth transition. Here’s a quick checklist:

  • Puppy-proof your space: Remove hazards like loose wires, small objects, and toxic plants.
  • Create a cozy area: Set up a designated sleeping area with a bed and toys.
  • Purchase supplies: Don’t forget food, water bowls, a collar, leash, and toys!
